Automate WhatsApp E-Commerce Order Tracking

The customer has paid. Now they have one question: where is my order? WhatsApp e-commerce order tracking answers it before the customer asks. We explain step by step which message to send when, how Meta classifies these messages, and how to win back products left in the cart.

The few days between payment and delivery are when a customer pays the most attention to your brand. If you stay silent during that time, the customer either writes to you or starts to worry. WhatsApp e-commerce order tracking fills exactly that gap: at steps like order confirmation, shipment and delivery, you tell the customer on your own initiative. Below we explain which notifications to set up, Meta's rules, and the finer points of abandoned cart messages.

Why does order tracking on WhatsApp work?

Because the customer is already there. Email inboxes are full of campaigns, SMS messages often get a glance at best; WhatsApp is the app where customers chat with friends and that they open every day. And a notification doesn't have to stay one-way. The customer can reply to the same message with "can I change my address?" and the conversation lands directly with your team.

There is also the operations side. Writing messages by hand for every order is fine for the first 20 orders. After that, messages get forgotten, delayed or sent to the wrong person. An automated setup ties this load to your store's data: when the order status changes, the message goes out by itself.

Which notifications should you send automatically?

Every store's flow is a bit different. Still, we see three groups that work for almost everyone.

Order confirmation

A short message that goes out the moment payment is received. The order number, a product summary and the estimated shipping time are enough. With the variables in the template, you fill in the customer's name and order number automatically; the message looks personal, not bulk.

Shipping updates

Handed to the carrier, out for delivery, delivered. Each status change can be a separate notification. Adding the tracking number or tracking link to the message means the customer doesn't need to write "where is my parcel". But don't overdo it: sending a message for every minor intermediate status wears the customer out. For most stores, handed to the carrier and delivered are enough.

Notifications to your business

Order tracking isn't only for the customer. When a new order arrives, a message landing on your phone or the warehouse manager's phone speeds up packing, especially in small teams. A daily sales summary and stock alerts work on the same logic.

How does Meta classify these messages?

Every message the business starts goes out with a template that Meta has approved. Templates are split into categories, and the category decides two things: whether the message gets approved and how much it is charged. According to Meta's official template category guide, for a template to count as utility (service/informational), it must not have a promotional purpose and must relate directly to the user's order, account or transaction.

Message Meta category What to watch for
Order confirmation Utility Don't add discount codes or product recommendations
Shipping and delivery update Utility Keep to information about that order only
Abandoned cart reminder Marketing Counts as marketing even if the customer asks for it
Campaign, new product announcement Marketing Send to people who have given marketing consent

Mixed content is marketing. Meta treats an order update that contains a promotion as a marketing template. The moment you add "10% off your next purchase" under a shipping message, the message changes category.

On the pricing side, Meta has charged per message since 1 July 2025. The fee is charged only for delivered messages and varies by both the message category and the recipient's country code. There is also a new change to keep track of: according to Meta's pricing page, from 1 October 2026, utility messages sent while a customer service window is open are charged again. We explained how this window works in our article on the WhatsApp 24-hour rule.

Chatopya adds no commission to the template message fee; whatever Meta's unit price is gets passed through. You also work out the estimated campaign cost together with our team.

How do you win back a customer who abandoned their cart?

A customer who adds a product to the cart and leaves the checkout page has already shown interest. A single reminder sent at the right time means far more than a campaign sent to a cold audience. But the rules are stricter here.

  • Consent is required. The abandoned cart message is in the marketing category. The customer must have agreed to receive marketing messages from you on WhatsApp. A checkbox on the checkout page is the most practical way to do that.
  • Choose the timing well. Messaging a few minutes after the customer leaves the cart can feel intrusive; waiting a few days cools the interest. We recommend finding the right timing by testing with your own audience.
  • One reminder is often enough. Sending repeated messages for the same cart raises the risk of blocks and reports, which lowers your number's quality rating.
  • Show the product. The image and name of the product in the cart, and a button that goes straight to checkout, work better than a long text.
  • Don't make discounts a reflex. If you give a coupon for every abandoned cart, customers learn it and start leaving carts on purpose.

When writing the template text, a look at Meta's rejection reasons will make your job easier. We collected the most common ones in the article on why template approvals are rejected.

How do you set this up with Chatopya?

Chatopya's marketplace and e-commerce integration connects your Trendyol, Hepsiburada and Shopify store to your WhatsApp Business API number. The integration is not in the Starter plan; it is included in the other plans. The flow roughly goes like this:

  1. The number is connected to the API. We handle Meta business verification and the application on your behalf. You can move your existing number; in that case the WhatsApp Business app on your phone closes on that number and old chats are not carried over.
  2. Templates are prepared. Together with our team, you write the order confirmation, shipping and cart reminder templates in line with Meta's rules and submit them for approval from the dashboard.
  3. Triggers are connected. Order and shipping notifications are triggered from the integration. The order notification goes to both the customer and you; when the shipping status changes, an automatic WhatsApp message goes to the customer. For Shopify stores, the abandoned cart reminder is part of this flow too.
  4. You follow the reports. You see the delivery, read, reply and link click information for each message.

When a customer replies to a notification, the conversation lands on the Conversations screen. The AI answers frequently asked questions from your own business information; what it can't solve it passes to an agent together with the chat history. The daily sales summary, best-selling products and stock alerts also come to your WhatsApp.

The KVKK side. The dashboard keeps consent records, opt-out requests and send history. When a customer says "I don't want messages anymore", you have a record of it. (KVKK is Turkey's personal data protection law.)

When you want to send campaign messages to your marketplace customers, you enter bulk messaging rules. We covered the consent question there in detail in our article Is sending bulk messages on WhatsApp legal?

The mistakes we see most often

  • Adding a campaign sentence to the order confirmation, which moves the template into the marketing category.
  • Sending a separate message for every intermediate shipping status and wearing the customer out.
  • Sending an abandoned cart reminder without consent.
  • Leaving a customer who replied to a notification without an answer for hours. The automated message starts the conversation; the team or the bot has to carry it on.

In short: keep order tracking messages plain and focused on information, and leave selling to abandoned cart and campaign messages. As long as you don't mix the two, the customer stays happy and your number's quality is protected.

Frequently asked questions

Is the API required to send order notifications on WhatsApp?

For automated notifications tied to store data, yes. The WhatsApp Business app on your phone doesn't support template messages triggered from the store system; you need the WhatsApp Business API for that.

Does a shipping notification count as a marketing message?

Not if it contains only information about the order; Meta treats it as utility. If you add a discount or product recommendation to the message, it moves to the marketing category.

Do I need the customer's consent for an abandoned cart message?

Yes. Meta counts a cart reminder as a marketing message, so the customer must have agreed to receive marketing messages.

Do Trendyol and Hepsiburada orders also get WhatsApp notifications?

With Chatopya's Trendyol and Hepsiburada integration, order notifications go to the customer and the business on WhatsApp. This integration is included in all plans except Starter.

Are order notifications charged?

Yes, Meta charges for every delivered template message based on category and country. Chatopya adds no commission to this fee; Meta's unit price is passed through as is.
