How to Get the WhatsApp Green Tick (Official Badge)

The green tick is the official account badge WhatsApp gives to businesses. It isn't required, but it tells customers "this really is that brand."

What the green tick is, and what it isn't

The green tick (official business account badge) means WhatsApp has verified that a business account really is the brand it claims to be. It appears as a small check mark next to the business name on the chat screen.

Two other things get mixed up with it: the Business account label (the "Business Account" wording that appears automatically on every WhatsApp Business account, which is not verification) and the blue tick verification badges on other platforms. The green tick is neither of these. It is specific to WhatsApp and is granted through its own application and review process.

Who can apply

To apply, you need an account that uses the WhatsApp Business API and has completed business verification in its Meta Business account. You can't apply for a green tick from the WhatsApp Business app on your phone.

Beyond that, Meta also looks at how well known the brand is when it reviews an application: is it a brand people search for, does it have a public website and official communication channels? These questions affect the outcome. Small and local businesses can apply too, but a verifiable presence outside the brand's own channels (a website, social media accounts) strengthens the application.

Requirements

  • The display name must match the brand name exactly — a plain brand name like "Chatopya," not one with marketing add-ons like "Chatopya Campaign."
  • The Meta Business account must be verified — the business identity must be confirmed with a tax certificate or company documents.
  • Contact details must be consistent — the number on WhatsApp should match the details on your website and other channels.
  • The business must not be in a prohibited category — under Meta's commerce policies, some sectors (for example prescription drug sales or gambling) cannot apply.

A common mistake Choosing a display name that differs from the brand name (an abbreviation, an added slogan, a different spelling) is the most common reason applications are rejected. Before you apply, make sure the display name is exactly the same as your registered brand name.

The application process

In short, the process has these steps:

  1. Business verification is completed in the Meta Business account
  2. The display name request on the WhatsApp Business account is entered so that it matches the brand name exactly
  3. The official account badge application is submitted to Meta through the solution partner
  4. Meta reviews it. The time isn't guaranteed and varies with how well known the business is
  5. After approval, the badge appears on the account automatically

Your solution partner (Chatopya) carries out all of these steps on your behalf; you only provide the required documents.

Reasons for rejection and reapplying

The most common reasons for rejection:

  • A mismatch between the display name and the registered brand name
  • Incomplete business verification or inconsistent documents
  • The brand doesn't yet meet the recognition criteria Meta looks for

If you're rejected, the account isn't closed. You just don't get the badge, and you keep using the API. You can apply again once you've fixed what was missing; there is usually a waiting period between consecutive applications.

Can you use the API without a green tick

Yes. The green tick is entirely optional, and no feature of the WhatsApp Business API (chatbot, bulk messaging, integrations) depends on it. Many businesses use the API without the badge and have no problems. The badge is only an extra layer that reinforces customer trust visually.
