After Black Friday: Turn Deal Hunters into Loyal Customers

Customer loyalty after Black Friday is the real test of the campaign. The orders are in, the warehouse is empty and the report looks good. But how many of the new names on that list will buy from you again in January?

We don't start thinking about this question when November ends, but when the first order confirmation goes out. A customer who comes in with a discount may have come for the price, not for you. What carries them to a second order is often not a second campaign but the experience they had on the first order.

Below we walk through the first 30 days after Black Friday (27 November this year) and Cyber Monday (30 November), step by step. How to prepare the campaign messages is a separate topic; we collected it in the Black Friday WhatsApp campaign guide. If you'd like to see the whole picture of the period, start with the guide to increasing sales with WhatsApp on Black Friday.

How do you get to know a new customer in the first 30 days?

About someone who ordered for the first time on Black Friday, you have three things: what they bought, how much they spent and which channel they came from. It looks like little, but it's enough to build the first segment.

Our suggestion: as soon as the campaign ends, split the sales data in two, "first-time buyers" and "people who had bought before". The second group already knows you. The first group knows you as little more than a discount banner.

That's why the first 30 days are a period of trust, not of sales. The order arriving on time, a problem solved quickly and no unnecessary messages. That's all there is to it.

Why are order and shipping updates the first step of loyalty?

The most-asked question in the November rush is clear: "Where is my order?" If the customer has to ask it, the experience has already lost a point.

Order received, shipped, out for delivery, delivered. If you tell the customer about these four moments yourself, you've answered before the question comes. On WhatsApp these messages go out with templates in Meta's utility category; they carry no marketing content.

In Chatopya, with the Shopify, Trendyol and Hepsiburada integrations, order notifications go to both the customer and the business; when the shipping status changes, an automatic WhatsApp message goes to the customer. If you use another platform, there's no ready-made integration and we connect it with a custom integration; the scope is settled in the quote. We cover the notification setup in detail in the article on WhatsApp ecommerce order tracking.

A note on cost: Meta has charged per message since 1 July 2025. Since 1 October 2026, utility templates sent inside the 24-hour window after the customer wrote are charged too. For template-free replies inside the window, there are 1,000 free messages per number per month, then charged. You can work out a rough busy-period budget on the WhatsApp cost calculator page.

A warning: don't inflate the number of notifications. Instead of sending a message for every shipping movement, pick the moments the customer really wants to know about.

How do you measure satisfaction after delivery?

The product has reached the door. Now is exactly the time to ask a short question, but not a flood of "rate us" requests.

A one-question survey a day or two after delivery is enough: "Did your order arrive as you expected?" If the answer is yes, thank them and leave it there. If the answer is no, hand the conversation to an agent right away; that customer is the closest to becoming loyal, because they told you their complaint.

In Chatopya, a survey flow is built without code in the drag-and-drop flow designer. A satisfaction (CSAT) survey also goes out at the end of every conversation with an agent. Because sentiment analysis flags a customer who writes angrily or anxiously right away, these conversations don't slip by on busy days.

How should communication work during returns?

The hidden side of Black Friday is returns. Some of the products bought on discount will come back, and you need to plan for that.

We don't count a customer who returns as lost. If they found the process easy and transparent, the chance that they come back remains. A few simple rules help:

  • State the return terms and period clearly in the order confirmation or the delivery message, so the customer doesn't have to call.
  • When a return request comes in, say what will happen step by step: how the parcel will be sent, when the money will come back.
  • Send a single notification when the refund is made.
  • Don't send a new campaign to a customer who returned something right away. Wait a while.

In Chatopya, a flow that collects information for a return can be built; the return itself is processed from the store or marketplace panel, and we don't have a feature that automates marketplace returns and cancellations.

Which segments should you work with?

Seeing the post-November list as one block is the mistake we see most often. The same "New Year deals have started" message goes to everyone, and then blocks go up.

We suggest these five groups:

SegmentWho?What to sendWhat not to send
First-time buyersPlaced their first order on Black FridayOrder/shipping information, a usage tip, a satisfaction questionA new campaign in the first week
Repeat buyersHad ordered beforeEarly access, a complementary product suggestionA general announcement that goes to everyone
High basketSpent clearly above averageA personal thank-you, priority support informationExcessive discount offers
Category interestBought from a particular categoryNew or complementary products in that categoryAnnouncements for unrelated categories
ReturnersReturned their orderReturn process information, then a calm follow-upA campaign before the return is finished

In Chatopya you can split the contact list by tag, order history, interest and custom fields. The list comes automatically from the integration; you can also upload contacts from Excel and export the results.

When is the right time to buy again?

There's no single right day. The nature of the product decides.

If you sell consumables (cosmetics, pet food, coffee), the time the product runs out is a good signal: for a customer who bought a 30-day pack, a reminder around day 25 makes sense. In clothing or electronics, the second purchase often comes from a complementary product. Recommending another coat to someone who bought a coat a week ago is pointless, but a scarf or boots might work.

Look at your own data. In your store analytics, what is the average time between the first and second order in each category? Place the reminder a little before that time. In Chatopya, you can plan these messages in advance with scheduled sending.

How do you build the bridge from Cyber Monday to New Year?

Cyber Monday falls on 30 November this year, only three days after Black Friday. Sending the same person a second discount message within three days is tempting. Be careful.

For someone who shopped on Black Friday, a Cyber Monday message makes sense only if it offers something truly different: a complementary category, a product they left in the cart, or a condition valid only for that day. If you show the same product cheaper, the customer may feel cheated. The discount regulation comes into play here too: since 1 August 2026, the pre-discount price is taken as the lowest price of the 10 days before the date the discount starts. A "discount" made after the Black Friday price may run into this rule.

New Year is a separate opportunity. A customer who bought for themselves on Black Friday may buy gifts in December. The most valuable information here is the last shipping day: a message like "last order day for delivery before New Year" is both useful and brings sales.

For the details of campaign preparation, see the Black Friday WhatsApp campaign guide, and for products left in the cart on Cyber Monday, the abandoned cart reminder guide.

Placing an order on Black Friday doesn't mean agreeing to receive marketing messages. We see many businesses mix this up.

Order and shipping notifications are transactional information. A campaign message needs separate consent. Meta requires that the person clearly knows they agreed to receive messages from this business and that the business name is stated. In Turkey, sending a commercial electronic message to a recipient who is not a merchant or tradesperson requires prior consent and the recording of that consent in the İYS (Turkey's commercial message registry). We recommend confirming with your legal adviser where your WhatsApp messages stand under these rules; we cover the topic in the article Is sending bulk messages on WhatsApp legal?.

Frequency is a separate matter. Meta applies a per-person limit on marketing templates, and this limit isn't fixed; it varies with the person's recent engagement and applies to messages from all businesses. So the campaigns everyone sends in November can affect the delivery of your message too. Remove a customer who asks to opt out from the list right away. Chatopya keeps the consent record, opt-out requests and sending history; check this record regularly.

What does seeing history across channels in one place give you?

On Black Friday a customer asked about size on Instagram, placed an order on WhatsApp and asked about a return in the chat window on your site. If they look like three different people on three separate screens, the agent starts from scratch each time.

In Chatopya, when a phone number or channel ID matches, the WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, Telegram and Web Chat records are gathered on a single customer card and the history appears in a single timeline. When a conversation opens, the customer card sits beside it. The agent can say "You asked about size last week, did the right size arrive?" It's a small sentence, but the customer feels recognized. Details are on the multichannel customer communication page.

How do you measure loyalty?

We read the numbers from two places.

On the store side (reports from your ecommerce platform or analytics tool):

  • The repeat purchase rate of first-time Black Friday buyers within 30, 60 and 90 days
  • The average time between the first and second order
  • The return rate and the comeback of customers who returned something

On the messaging side, Chatopya gives a delivery, read, reply and link click report per message; the analytics dashboard shows response time, resolution rate and satisfaction. Track your quality rating and opt-out requests too. If opt-outs rise after a type of message, the tone or frequency of that message is wrong.

In short: clicks are a good sign, but the real indicator of loyalty is the second order.

Frequently asked questions

When can I send a campaign message to a customer who shopped on Black Friday?

Even with marketing consent, we suggest waiting until the first order is delivered and satisfaction is clear. Without consent you can't send a campaign message; you can only send order and shipping updates.

Are order and shipping notifications charged?

Yes. Meta charges for these messages as utility templates, and since 1 October 2026 utility templates inside the 24-hour window are charged too. You can see the current amount on the WhatsApp cost calculator page.

Is it right to send a Black Friday customer another discount on Cyber Monday?

Offering the same product cheaper can bother the customer. A truly different offer, such as a complementary product, a different category or a product left in the cart, is better. Also keep in mind that the pre-discount price counts as the lowest price of the last 10 days.

What should I do if a customer wants to leave WhatsApp messages?

Act on the request right away and stop sending marketing messages to that person. Honoring an opt-out is necessary for both the regulation and your number's quality rating.

Can I see the repeat purchase rate in Chatopya?

The repeat purchase rate is read from your store's or ecommerce platform's report. Chatopya reports the messaging side: delivery, reads, replies and clicks; also response time and satisfaction.
