How to Switch to WhatsApp Business With the Same Number

You can switch from regular WhatsApp to WhatsApp Business with the same number, without losing your chats. The parts that need the most care are the way back and moving to the API. We walk you through what you will run into, from preparation to going back.

If you are asking how to switch to WhatsApp Business, let's start with the good news: you can do it in a few minutes, keeping the same number and without losing your chats. The way back is not as easy. So we cover what you need to prepare first, then the steps, and finally going back and why moving to the API is a completely different job.

What is the difference between regular WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business?

Both are WhatsApp's own apps, and they are used in almost the same way. WhatsApp Business is a free-to-download app built with small businesses in mind. The difference shows up in the business-specific tools.

  • Business profile: Your customers see details like your address, working hours, website and a short description right on your profile.
  • Automated messages: You set up greeting and away messages once and leave them.
  • Catalog, labels and quick replies: You share your products from the chat, sort your customers with labels, and tie the answers you type often to shortcuts.

In short: if you run your business from your personal number and your customers already write to you on that number, switching to the Business app is a sensible first step.

What should you prepare before switching?

The switch itself is quick. So is the preparation. But there are a few points that can cause trouble later if you skip them.

  1. Back up your chats. From the backup section in regular WhatsApp's chat settings, take a current backup to Google Drive on Android or iCloud on iPhone. The history is transferred during the switch anyway; the backup is your insurance if something goes wrong.
  2. Keep your SIM card in the phone. The Business app sends a code to verify your number. If you cannot receive the code, setup stops halfway.
  3. Update the apps. Having both regular WhatsApp and the Business app you will download on the current version makes the transfer easier.
  4. Think about personal and business use. After you switch, that number appears as a business account. If you also message your family and friends from this number, take that into account from the start.

One number, one app The same number cannot be connected to both regular WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business at the same time. If you want to use both apps together, you need two separate numbers; for example, on a dual-SIM phone, one personal and one for business.

How do you switch to WhatsApp Business? Step by step

The flow is almost the same on Android and iPhone. The wording on the screens may differ a little by version; the order is as follows:

  1. Download the WhatsApp Business app from the App Store or Google Play. Make sure the publisher is WhatsApp.
  2. Open the app and accept the terms of service.
  3. The app usually shows the number you use in regular WhatsApp by itself. If you want to continue with the same number, choose it; if you will use a different number, enter that one.
  4. Enter the verification code sent to your number.
  5. Confirm the option to transfer your chat history, media and preferences. Do not close the app until the transfer finishes.
  6. Enter your business name, category and profile photo. Then complete the profile details such as address, working hours and website.

That is all. From now on the number does not work in regular WhatsApp; it continues in the Business app. Your customers keep writing to you on the same number; the only thing that changes on their side is that they see your business details on your profile.

Make your first job right after the switch setting up the greeting and away messages. It is the easiest way to tell the customer "we got your message" with little effort.

What happens to your chat history?

According to WhatsApp's own help page, after you verify your number in the Business app, you can move your chat history, media (such as stickers and wallpaper) and chat preferences (such as muted chats and ringtones) to the new app. If you confirm the transfer, your conversations come over as they are.

So what if you are also changing phones at the same time? Then we suggest splitting the job in two. First, switch from regular WhatsApp to Business on the old phone and check that everything is in place; then move the Business account to the new phone. Making both changes at once makes it harder to tell where a problem came from when one comes up.

Can you go back to regular WhatsApp?

You can. But there is a cost.

WhatsApp states clearly that moving all your information from the Business app back to regular WhatsApp is currently not supported. When you go back, you lose the following:

  • Business features such as the business profile, automated messages and catalog,
  • The chats and media created while you used the Business app.

Make a copy before going back Customer conversations that built up in Business do not carry over to regular WhatsApp. If there are conversations you want to keep, export those chats one by one and make a copy for yourself before going back.

The Business app or the WhatsApp Business API?

This is a point that gets mixed up very often. When people say "switching to WhatsApp Business", most mean the Business app on the phone. The WhatsApp Business API is a separate structure: it works not on the phone but through a software panel; multiple agents, chatbots and automated notifications come into play on this side. We explain the differences in detail in our What is the WhatsApp Business API article.

What happens to the app on the phone when you move the number to the API?

Switching from regular WhatsApp to the Business app and switching from the Business app to the API are not the same thing. When you move your existing number to the WhatsApp Business API with Chatopya, the WhatsApp Business app on that number closes on the phone and old chats are not carried over to the panel. Meta's developer documentation also says that when you delete a number from the app and register it with the API, the existing message history is lost, and it reminds you to take a backup beforehand.

That is why you should back up the important chats in the app before moving to the API. If you do not have to keep your existing number, starting from scratch with a new number is also an option. In Chatopya, we handle Meta business verification and the application on your business's behalf; panel setup takes about 5 minutes. If the number has never been registered with Meta before, Meta's own review time is added to that.

Which one suits you?

There is no single right answer; you need to look at the size of your business. The picture we see most often in the field is this:

  • Stay on regular WhatsApp: If the number is entirely personal and customer messages come in only now and then.
  • Switch to the Business app: If you run the business alone or with one or two people and can keep up with messages from the phone.
  • Look at the API: If more than one person will handle the same number, if you want to send order and shipping notifications automatically, leave frequent questions to AI, or gather Instagram DM, Messenger, Telegram and Web Chat in the same inbox as WhatsApp.

We explain how to share a single number as a team in our WhatsApp multi-user guide. For most businesses this is also the natural order: the Business app first, then the API once message traffic stops fitting on a phone.

Frequently asked questions

Will my chats be deleted when I switch to WhatsApp Business?

No. After you verify your number, if you confirm the transfer option, your chat history, media and preferences move to the Business app. Still, we recommend taking a current backup before the switch.

Can I use the same number in both WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business?

Not at the same time; a number is connected to only one app. To use both apps together, you need two separate numbers.

Can I go back from WhatsApp Business to regular WhatsApp?

Yes, but business features and the chats and media created in the Business app do not carry over to regular WhatsApp. Export the important conversations before going back.

Is the WhatsApp Business app paid?

WhatsApp offers the Business app as a free-to-download app. The cost question comes in on the WhatsApp Business API side, with Meta's message charges.

Do old chats carry over when I move from the Business app to the API?

Not when moving with Chatopya: when the number moves to the API, the app on the phone closes on that number and past chats do not come to the panel. That is why we recommend backing up important conversations before the move.
