How to Open a Business WhatsApp Account: App or API?
Search for a "business WhatsApp account" and two routes come up: the free WhatsApp Business app and the WhatsApp Business API. We explain which one suits you, Meta business verification, the display name and the fees in effect since October 2026 in plain language.
There is no single answer to how to open a business WhatsApp account, because WhatsApp has no separate product called a "business account." Meta offers businesses two routes: the free WhatsApp Business app you install on a phone, and the WhatsApp Business Platform, commonly called the API, which connects through software. With both you get a business profile. The difference is in scale, team and automation.
Below we put the two routes side by side and walk through the API steps in order. The display name, Meta business verification and the fees in effect since October 2026 are covered along the way.
Which options do people mean by "business account"?
The businesses that come to us with this question usually have one of three needs in mind:
- Separating from a personal number: Customers write to the business, and the profile shows an address, working hours and a website.
- Working as a team: More than one person looks after the messages that come to the same number.
- Scaling up: Order and shipping notifications go out automatically, campaign messages reach thousands of people, and a bot answers frequent questions.
For the first need, the app is often enough. For the other two, you need to look at the API.
Who is the WhatsApp Business app enough for?
The app is free and takes a few minutes to set up. You download it, verify your number and enter the business name and category. Then you fill in the address, working hours and website fields on the profile. Tools such as quick replies, labels, and greeting and away messages come ready.
For a neighborhood business, a boutique or a freelancer where one or two people handle the chats and daily message traffic is reasonable, this setup is quite enough. The limit starts here: the account is tied to one phone, there is no integration with other software, and you can't send controlled, reportable messages to hundreds of people.
When do you need the WhatsApp Business API?
If two of these sentences sound familiar, it is time to think seriously about the API:
- "Three or four people look at the messages, and it gets confusing who answered what."
- "We type order and shipping details to customers one by one."
- "Questions that come in at night go unanswered until morning."
- "We want to send campaign announcements in an orderly, measurable way."
The API has no app that opens on a phone. You connect to it through software: either directly with your own development team or through one of Meta's solution partners. You can also look at our WhatsApp Business API page for details.
| Topic | WhatsApp Business app | WhatsApp Business API |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Downloading to the phone and verifying the number is enough | Needs a Meta business portfolio, a display name and a software connection |
| Cost | The app is free | Meta charges per delivered message; the software or solution partner fee is separate |
| Team use | Limited to the phone and devices linked to it | Many agents through a panel |
| Automation | Greeting, away message, quick reply | Chatbot, AI replies, notifications triggered from integrations |
| Bulk sending | Limited tools such as broadcast lists | With approved templates, within Meta's sending limits |
| Business verification | Not required | Not required to start, but needed to grow |
How do you open a business WhatsApp account with the API, step by step?
The order roughly goes like this:
- Meta business portfolio: You need a Meta business account (Business Manager) that belongs to your business, with legal details entered correctly. Portfolios tied to an agency's or an employee's personal account cause trouble later.
- Choosing a number: You can get a new line or use your existing number. The number must be able to receive a verification code.
- Display name: You decide the name customers will see on your profile.
- Business verification: You document to Meta that your business is real.
- Payment method: A payment method is set up on the account for Meta's message fees.
- First templates: For the messages where you write to the customer first, you prepare templates and send them to Meta for approval.
How should you choose a display name?
The display name is the business name the customer sees on your WhatsApp profile. According to Meta, this name must be associated with your business and follow its commerce policies and name formatting rules. In practice our advice is simple: choose the name you use on your sign, your website or your invoice. Names that can't be linked to your brand, or that consist only of a generic word, can cause trouble.
One more detail. Meta starts the display name review once business verification is complete; after that review starts, every name change you make goes through approval again. That's why choosing the right name from the start matters.
What does Meta business verification change?
You can start using the API without verification. But the limits are tight. According to Meta's documentation, a new business portfolio can reach at most 250 different people with messages outside the customer service window in 24 hours. Business verification is one of the ways to raise this limit to 2,000; after that, if quality is good, the limit can rise on its own to 10,000, 100,000 and unlimited levels.
The number of templates changes too: on an unverified portfolio each account is limited to 250 templates, while on a verified portfolio with an approved display name this goes up to 6,000. We walk through document preparation and common mistakes step by step in our Meta business verification guide.
A limit is not an entitlement. A rise in your sending limit depends on the quality of your messages. If complaints and blocks go up, your number's quality rating drops; so send useful content only to people who have opted in.

Book a free demoHow much does a business WhatsApp account cost?
On the API, Meta charges for every delivered message; the amount varies with the message category (marketing, utility, authentication, service) and the recipient's country code. Messages your customer writes to you are free.
An important change took effect on October 1, 2026. Free-form replies you give in the 24-hour window that opens after a customer writes, that is, service messages, are charged again. Meta gives each business number 1,000 free service messages per month; the unused part doesn't roll over to the next month. Utility templates sent inside the same window are also charged now.
One important area stays free: the 72-hour free entry point window that opens when a customer writes to you from an ad that leads to WhatsApp. You'll find the numbers in detail in our WhatsApp Business API pricing guide.
Don't skip the payment method. According to Meta, if the account has no payment method, service messages aren't delivered once the monthly free allowance runs out. Don't leave this step out when you open the account.
Is the green tick required?
No. You don't need a green tick to open a business account, send templates or raise your limit. Meta gives this badge to well-known brands that are notably featured in the news. We cover the criteria and how the application works separately in our WhatsApp green tick guide.
How do you open a business WhatsApp account with Chatopya?
Chatopya is a Meta-approved Tech Provider and a Meta partner. Here is how the process goes with us:
- We run Meta business verification and the API application on your behalf, using your tax certificate and brand details.
- We can move your existing number to the API. In that case the WhatsApp Business app on your phone closes on that number and past chats don't move over. If you prefer, we start with a new number.
- Panel setup takes about 5 minutes. If the number has never been registered with Meta before, Meta's own review time is added.
- You prepare template messages with our team in line with the rules and send them for Meta approval from the panel.
- If you meet the criteria, we're with you in the green tick application too.
We pass on Meta's message fee at Meta's unit price and add no commission on top. Setup and training are free, and our Turkish-speaking support team is ready for your questions.
Frequently asked questions
Is a business WhatsApp account paid?
The WhatsApp Business app is free. On the API, Meta charges per delivered message, and the fee for the software you use is separate.
Can I move my existing number to a business account?
Yes. When you move it with Chatopya, the app closes on that number and old chats don't come to the panel; if you want to keep the history, you can also start with a new number.
Can I use the WhatsApp API without business verification?
You can, but on new portfolios there is a limit of 250 different people per 24 hours outside the customer service window. We suggest completing verification to raise the limit.
How long does it take to open a business WhatsApp account?
The app opens in a few minutes. On the API side, Chatopya panel setup takes about 5 minutes; if the number is being registered with Meta for the first time, Meta's review time is added.
Can I change the display name later?
You can, but once the display name review has started, every new name can't be used until it passes Meta approval.
